Sambar

Ingrediants
  • Vegetable pieces-3 cups
  • Onion-1
  • Green Chilly -4
  • Garlic-2
  • Curry leaves -2 strip
  • Toor  Dal-1/2 cup
  • Tamarind -1 lemon shaped
  • Salt
  • Asafoetida/Hing Powder -1 pinch
  • For Preheating:
    • Sambar Powder-2  tsp
    • Coriander Powder-1 tsp
    • Turmeric  Powder-1/2  tsp
    • Kashmiri  Chilly Powder-1 tsp
    • Fenugreek Powder-2 pinch
  • For tempering
    • Oil-2 tbs
    • Shallots- 5-6
    • Dried Red chilly -2
    • Curry leaves-1 strip

Sambar Recipe


Steps to prepare
  1. Soak Toor Dal for 2-3 hours
  2. Soak tamarind in ½ cup water for 15-20 minutes and take juice out of it
  3. Heat  Sambar Powder,Coriander Powder, Turmeric  Powder, Kashmiri  Chilly Powder, Fenugreek Powder in a pan for 2 minutes.
  4. Pressure cook the vegetable pieces along with toor dal, tamarind juice, sliced onion, green chilly, garlic, curry leaves, heated Powders, salt  by adding  enough water so that the pieces are covered.  Just  one whistle is enough and release the pressure immediately
  5. Heat  oil in a Pan and add mustard seeds. When mustard seed crackle add sliced shallots. When shallots are slight brown add Dried Red Chilly and Curry Leaves. Add this to the cooker when shallots become brown in colour.
  6. Simmer in a medium-low flame till the Sambar reaches your desired consistency. Add Asafoetida powder before removing from the flame.
  7. Yummy Sambar is ready
